Title: Embracing the Seasons
Author: [livejournal.com profile] willowaus
Fandom: X-Men (Age of Apocalypse)
Pairing: Magneto/Rogue
Theme set: Alpha theme
Rating: T
A/N: Many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] sionnain for the beta! This was written for [livejournal.com profile] 1sentence so punctuation has been abused, lots. :)

1. Comfort. His daughter is dead and she doesn’t know what to do or say to him, opting merely to stand by his side as she had promised Wanda when she breathed her last breath; she hopes that is enough.

2. Kiss. Rogue watches Magneto carefully, seeing the fatigue in his stance as he instructs the evacuation of Wundagore; she hesitantly blows a kiss towards Wanda’s grave before following the others to the plane.

3. Soft. She is afraid of the hate she will see when he looks at her, knowing his daughter would still be alive if she hadn’t confronted Holocaust; she’s surprised at how gentle his eyes are when he turns towards her.

4. Pain. They move bases a number of times and Rogue despises each venture, hating the far away, aching look on his face, wishing they’d had been able to stay in the mountains where they would at least be able to visit Wanda’s grave.

5. Potatoes. She tries to help by taking over the cooking duties as well as training with the others, hoping to show her commitment to the Cause, crying when she burns a meal for the fifth time, stopping when he enters and silently begins helping her fix the mess she has created.

6. Rain. “She loved the rain,” he tells her and Rogue freezes, wondering what she should say to that, cursing herself when he turns back to the food in silence .

7. Chocolate. “I miss chocolate,” she whispers, mentally kicking herself when he doesn’t answer, his attention remaining on the task before them and she wonders if he likens her to reckless, immature Bobby; she hopes not.

8. Happiness. She is surprised when she finds a Hershey’s bar on her makeshift bedside table the next day, grinning as she undoes the wrapper, cherishing the taste of it as she licks her fingers clean, flashing him a wide smile.

9. Telephone. “We don’t have a phone,” Rogue comments, remembering when her mother had to call 911 because she fell from their backyard tree and she wonders what they’re supposed to use if there is an emergency; she glares at Magneto when he reminds her that is the reason they have a telepath on their team and she wishes she had the guts to wipe the smirk off his face.

10. Ear. Rogue likes to observe her teammates, a skill that Mystique pounded into her head, though she doubts the woman would approve of her intense interest in the way Magneto’s hair curls behind his ears since he started letting it grow longer.

11. Name. It takes her a year before she can say Wanda’s name, hand clasping around her mouth the moment that she does, afraid that she’ll upset him, surprised by the tender look he gives her before returning to his plans.

12. Sensual. She watches as he contemplates their next move, forehead creasing slightly in thought and she forces herself to walk away, confused by the sudden heat rushing through her body.

13. Death: “We are going to New Orleans,” he informs the team and Rogue frowns, remembering Te’te Annemarie’s words, warning her that she would only ever find death in that ‘city of hell’, feeling foolish when Magneto asks her what is wrong.

14. Sex: The new recruit, Remy, reminds her of the boys her Mama warned her about and she feels oddly drawn to him, enticed by his Bayou accent and slippery smile; she falters when Magneto calls for her and she turns, his steely gaze enthralling her even more.

15. Touch. “You can’t touch me!” Rogue yells, wrenching her arm back and glaring at Remy before moving quickly down the hall, accidentally running into Magneto, letting his words comfort her pained soul.

16. Weakness. She wordlessly follows him to the debriefing room, watching him closely as he explains the next mission, frowning when she sees the slight limp as he walks, knowing the injury he received in New Orleans was worse than he admitted and that he wouldn’t want her to fuss over it.

17. Tears. Jean is missing, Logan has left, and Rogue doesn’t know what to do with herself, opting to roam around the base, startled when she finds Magneto alone in the debriefing room; she quickly slips away, knowing he needs to be left alone as a sole tear falls down his face, knowing Jean’s loss reminds him of Wanda.

18. Speed. They relocate three more times in under a month, at least Rogue thinks it’s been a month; her concept of time is easily skewed by the tumultuous lives they lead.

19. Wind. Their new base is cold, wind sweeping through the cavernous hallways and chilling her to the bone; she idly remembers hot summer days and sweet tea that could give you cavities just by tasting it; he asks her what she is reminiscing about and she tells him, laughing at the disgusted look he gives her when she describes the copious amounts of sugar used to make the sweet concoction.

20. Freedom. “Magneto?” she asks, and falters at his intense stare, blushing when he asks, “Do I need to wait until we are free of Apocalypse’s rule for you to call me Erik?”

21. Life. She never expected him to ask that; as Mystique had informed her, “He trusts few, Rogue, little even know his first name, don’t get on his bad side”—Rogue was beginning to think she needed to forget anything she learned from that woman and start her own book about life and how to relate to Magneto.

22. Jealousy. “No,” she finally answers, diverting her attention towards the plans splayed out before them, faltering under the flash of suspicion in Remy’s eyes, unsure what the young man was worried about.

23. Hands. Rogue finds herself looking more closely at Magneto, her attention continuing to move to his hands, startled by the inappropriate thoughts blossoming as she does and quickly excuses herself.

24. Taste. She forces herself to train harder, moving up in the ranks, desperate to push aside the feelings she is having, hating herself when all she can do is look at him and wonder what his mouth tastes like.

25. Devotion. Jean and Logan return for a few days, both of them changed forever; Rogue can tell that Logan’s harsh words cut deep and she hopes she eases Magneto’s pain when she reminds him that she’ll never leave.

26. Forever. Magneto’s hand grasps hers and tears fall freely down her face; his mouth curves into a tender smile and she knows she will stay with this man until the day she dies.

27. Blood. Remy crashes down into them, pulling her roughly aside and glaring daggers at Magneto; she pulls away, slapping Remy when he mutters something about Wanda, pleased when she sees blood seep from the cut.

28. Sickness. Her heart constricts as Remy walks away, his words slicing through her; Magneto pulls her back and she leans into him, letting his embrace wash away any guilt that she feels.

29. Melody. She’s afraid of what the others will think about this new relationship, but Bobby’s rendition of ‘Rogue and Magneto sitting in a tree’ alleviates her trepidation.

30. Star. They move again, this time to an old mansion that used to belong to one of Magneto’s friends, and Rogue loves that she can see the stars from their bedroom window.

31. Home. No one wants to leave the new base, most of all Rogue; her fingers brush against the pale skin of her flat stomach and she hopes they will be able to create a home here for the child growing inside.

32. Confusion. She tries to remember the words to her favorite lullaby but continues to jumble the words; Creed tells her one he knows and she immediately loses her appetite.

33. Fear. Rogue wakes trembling from nightmares, grasping the sheets before she turns into Magneto’s embrace, his words soothing her.

34. Lightning/Thunder. The sky crackles with streaks of light and Rogue curls into Magneto’s side, smiling as she reminds him, “Wanda loved the rain.”

35. Bonds. His fingers entwine with hers, mouth pressing harsh kisses against her neck and she smiles as he utters one word, “Mine.”

36. Market. Later, she remembers a nursery rhyme, annoyed when he makes her recite it; she closes her eyes and begins, “To Market, to market to buy a fat pig”— his laughter causes her to quickly shut her mouth.

37. Technology. He shows her the robot named Nanny and she is unsure if she likes the idea of the machine holding their child; he reassures her that Nanny will help protect the baby.

38. Gift. She’s in labor for twenty-six hours and curses him, crushing his hand in hers until finally it is over; she can’t help but smile tiredly at the tiny boy wrapped in a small blanket before realizing that her ‘gift’ will not permit her to touch her own child.

39. Smile. Her smile fades, tears falling freely down her face, unconsoled by Magneto’s promise to find a way for her to touch the boy.

40. Innocence. She carefully takes the baby back, hiccupping when he snuggles closer to her, knowing he has no idea how dangerous that can be.

41. Completion. Rogue yawns, anxiously placing Charles down in the crib, wishing she could hold him a little longer but there is a mission to complete, and she has to remind herself that she fights to keep him safe; it’s the only way she can convince herself to leave the room.

42. Clouds. When she returns, she feels daring and takes Charles with her as she flies, making sure she doesn’t go to high; she loves the way he reaches for the clouds.

43. Sky. She does a few flips, holding him tightly, listening to him squeal with delight until she forces herself to descend.

44. Heaven. Magneto’s fingers brush against Charles’s cheek and she can’t hide her frown, wondering if she’ll only be able to touch her son’s skin when they are in Heaven.

45. Hell. That thought frightens her, making her think of his and Magneto’s inevitable deaths and she knows that watching them die would be her own personal hell.

46. Sun. Rogue remembers one of her mother’s favorite sayings—“Don’t let the sun set on your anger”—and has to recite that to herself a number of times when Magneto returns, covered in blood, from an unannounced mission.

47. Moon. She wants to yell at him, to scream at his irresponsibility; none of it happens when he pulls her close and she feels him tremble against her in the moonlight.

48. Waves. Her anger boils over and she clings to him, wave upon wave of anxiety rolling off of her.

49. Hair. Magneto calls for the both of them, bombs falling in the distance and she takes the time to nuzzle her son’s hair before stepping into her husband’s embrace.

50. Supernova. Their world ends in a burst of white light and she clings to Magneto, cradling Charles between them, thankful her life was full of so much love.

*sniffle* I'm all teary now. Very nice. I liked the thoughts in the Remy part, especially since that was a sticky point for me back in '95. And how appropriate to use Iceman to alleviate the tension.

Yeah...I remember that time period. Turned me off of the whole Rogue/Remy relationship...plus I was all in awe of M/R and their wonderful little family. *sigh* I miss AoA.

*g* That makes me happy, though...I don't really want you dead. AoA gives me so many mixed emotions. :P

T_T Beautiful and moving, really. The end, especially; really bittersweet, they are powerless in front of their destiny, but also so complete with each other - a state that the character of the "regular" X-universe can only dream of...

Yeah, their relationship in AoA is so perfect, yeah the world around them sucks but they are very much in love and both are such strong characters. *sigh* Thanks for reading!

Wow.

Fabulous job. And I loved the way it ran like a story vs. just various sentences.

And I *loved* AoA! Well done.
