Rogue clenched the steering wheel tightly, trying not to feel as nervous as she did. “I’m not supposed to drive yet,” she stated, turning the car on.

“Ease slowly onto the gas pedal,” Raven directed, ignoring her previous statement.

“Ain’t this against the law?” Rogue asked, placing her foot onto the pedal and gently pushed down.

Raven gave her a pointed look and Rogue grinned. “Can I go real fast?”

“Let’s work on backing up, shall we?” Irene stated, and Rogue nodded slowly backing out of the driveway. “I did it!”

“Celebrate after you get us to the grocery store,” Raven replied, as she leaned back into the seat, the car gradually moving down the road.

Rogue looked out the window, forehead pressed against the cool glass as she watched the car drive off. “She’s working on making the world a better place for us, for mutants,” Irene stated, her voice calm, certain.

Rogue turned and looked at her, smiling at the older woman’s serenity. “I know,” she whispered, and sat down at the table. “She’s gonna be okay, right?”

Irene smiled, pushing the plate of cookies across the table. “I do not see her death occurring for a long time, my dear child,” she replied, sipping her tea.

“You could have just said yes,” Rogue muttered, looking forlornly at the cookies.

“I suppose I could have,” Irene said, and rose, walking towards the vacated window.

She heard the back door open. “I’m going to the river. I’ll be back,” Rogue called.

The door shut and Irene touched the window, bowing her head, missing both of their presences, and wondered if death would be this silent.

“They don’t like me,” Rogue said, looking out the kitchen window at the members of her mother’s Brotherhood. She glanced over at Raven, who was stirring lemonade. “I don’t like them either.”

Raven raised an eyebrow, and handed off the pitcher, forcing herself not to smile at Rogue’s obvious discomfort. “Why do we need them?” Rogue growled.

“They have their uses, child,” Irene stated, removing glasses from the cupboard.

“Yeah, right,” Rogue mumbled as she walked out to the backyard.

Irene turned her attention to Raven. “They will not accept her.”

“She’ll be fine,” Raven replied. “Rogue is a survivor.”

“Even a survivor needs to feel loved,” Irene countered, and left the room. She's just like you.

Oh I like this! I really like the last one, too. I love how you're showing their little family. So sweet :)

I know :(

But you know. That'll be good, too. Just in a different way.

Another great batch of stories. These really are great. I love the whole concept of them actually having family moments...no matter how odd the moments and the family may be. (smile)
