“Turn on the television.”
Raven and Rogue looked up from their game of checkers. “Now,” Irene continued and Rogue hastily complied.
“What is it?” Raven asked, looking intently at her lover.
“Watch.” Irene pointed towards the machine, her voice demanding quiet.
Rogue looked at the screen, raising an eyebrow as a man in a weird outfit was shown. “Is he wearing a bucket?” she asked, trying not to giggle at the ridiculous uniform.
“Quiet, child,” Irene stated and Rogue nodded, smiling as she pretended to zip her lips closed.
“I cannot believe he is doing this,” Raven stated, with a sigh.
“Who is he?” Rogue asked, looking intently at the man, trying to remember if she’d seen him at the house before. She had a feeling it’d be hard to forget someone wearing a costume with a big M on it.
“None of your concern,” Raven replied, waving her hand for silence.
“For now,” Irene stated with a smile, ignoring the intent stares she knew were being directed her way. There are some events better left untold.

“Happy birthday, baby!” Raven exclaimed, running a hand through her daughter’s hair.
Rogue smiled, blew quickly and watched the flames die, tiny trails of smoke twirling towards the ceiling. “What did you wish for?” Raven asked and Rogue rolled her eyes.
“If I tell you, it won’t come true,” she replied and looked across the table at Irene, grinning at the older woman. “The cake’s beautiful, Oma.”
“You’re welcome, child.”
“Let me get the presents,” Raven said, sounding flustered as she left the room.
Irene stared blankly across the table, sensing the girl’s troubles, knowing she wished to have her friends present. She opened her mouth, intent on saying something comforting, but Rogue interrupted.
“It’s okay, Oma. I understand,” Rogue said, with a sigh. “Momma can be…” She looked at the cake, trying to voice the thoughts in her head.
“She does not share those she loves well,” Irene stated, with a smile.
“I know,” Rogue replied and Irene sensed the change in the girl’s demeanor as Raven entered the room again, laden down with presents. “There’s too many, Momma.”
Good girl, Irene thought, hoping that when she finally went her separate way that Rogue would remember the happy times they had together and not just dwell on the tougher aspects of their lives.

Irene knows this will not work out, not in the long run. She knows Rogue will not become their perfect, little soldier, will not be able to kill without guilt eating away at her. If she’s honest with herself, she’s known since the beginning, before they caught the girl in the park all those years ago.
Irene also knows that her time on this earth is nearing its end. She’s not a young woman anymore; her body is slowly dying no matter how much Raven wants to deny that fact. When she leaves this world, she knows her lover’s grasp on humanity will die as well, she only hopes that the love Raven has developed for their daughter will prevent that from happening for some time.
She listens to the two discuss the next mission and frowns, unsure Raven’s love for the girl will keep her from going mad, wondering if she’d made a horrible mistake by bringing Rogue into this demented little family.

And unfortunately, the future isn't all that great for Mystique, Destiny and Rogue.
