“Who taught you how to make cookies, momma?” Rogue asked, carefully handing over bag of sugar. “Was it your momma?”
Raven stiffened, staring at the bowl in front of her as images rushed her, reminding her of all she had endured while with her mother. Her mouth twisted as she remembered the burn of the rope around her neck, the searing pain of the makeshift whip as it cracked against her skin, her mother repeatedly reading passages from the Bible. Trying to cast the demon out.
“No, little one,” Raven replied, shaking her head.
Rogue was watching her carefully and she turned to look at the girl, startled by the intensity in her gaze. “She wasn’t a nice mommy, was she?”
“She was not,” Raven replied, smiling as her daughter’s arms wrapped around her in a tight hug.
“But then who taught you?” Rogue asked, looking up.
Raven’s smile grew as she remembered learning to bake the delicious treats, flour smudged on her nose, Irene’s laughter echoing in the cavernous kitchen. “It was Oma,” Rogue stated with a grin.
“How do you know?” Raven asked, watching the girl closely as she retrieved the bag of chocolate chips.
“You get this weird look on your face when you’re thinking about her,” Rogue replied, sitting back on the stool.
“A weird look?” Raven asked, amused.
“She gets it when she’s thinking about you, too,” Rogue told her, dumping the chips into the bowl. “I hope someone looks at me that way someday.”
“Someone will,” Irene replied from the doorway and they looked over at her.
“It ain’t Cody, is it?” Rogue asked, a disgusted look on her face. “He ate a worm!”
Irene laughed, sitting down in a stool across from them. “No, liebling, not him.”
Raven watched her closely, intent on remembering to ask Irene who she was speaking of, not sure she would like the answer, before turning her attention back to baking.

Raven woke to loud, shrieking cries and hurried into Rogue’s bedroom, sighing when she saw the girl thrashing about, trying to get away from an unknown enemy. She sat on the edge of the bed and pulled the girl into her lap, waiting for the nightmare to abate.
Within a few moments, Rogue awoke and clung to her, crying hysterically. “Calm down,” Raven whispered, caressing her hair. “You’re safe. Hush, child.”
“I don’t want you to die,” Rogue said, her grip tightening.
Raven pushed her back slightly, brushing hair from her face. “Why do you think that?”
Rogue buried her head against Raven’s shoulder before answering. “People don’t like you if you’re different,” she murmured. “They won’t like your pretty blue skin.”
“I will be fine,” Raven assured the girl, picking her up and heading towards the stairs. “They will never see my true form.” Not unless they are about to die.
She headed for the kitchen, smiling when she found Irene sitting at the table, three sets of milk and cookies laid out. “Hi, Oma,” Rogue greeted, wiping tears from her face as she settled onto one of the chairs.
“Your mother will be fine, liebling,” Irene informed her, gently.
Rogue looked intently at her for a few moments before nodding. “You can see everything,” she acknowledged, before eating.
Raven looked across the table towards Irene and grinned. Well, not everything. Irene merely smiled back.

Rogue crouched low, keeping silent, her breathing steady as she surveyed the room. Irene smiled from the couch, that all-knowing smile that comforted and disturbed, as she read one of the Braille books. Raven entered the room, hands on her hips, looking frustrated as she spoke. “Where is she?”
“She is around,” Irene informed her vaguely and Rogue forced herself not to giggle, not to move an inch.
“If she is out playing with that Robbins boy…” Raven replied, crossing her arms across her chest.
Rogue made a face, unsure why her Momma hated her best friend. “You will see her shortly,” Irene said, causing Rogue to smile.
Raven walked towards the window, approaching Rogue’s hiding spot. Rogue pounced, successfully surprising her as she grasped hold of one of her legs. Pain erupted on the side of her face as a fist slammed against her cheek. Rogue crumpled, tears falling down her face, as she clutched her injury.
Arms scooped her up, cradling her protectively, and she heard Raven’s harsh voice, “Why didn’t you warn me?”
“I did not see you harming her,” Irene replied and something cold pressed against Rogue’s cheek.
“I wanted to surprise you,” Rogue murmured, between sobs. “Show you I could hide well too.”
“You were perfect,” Raven said, and her crying slowly abated, even if the pain did not. “My perfect little girl.”
