The coffee is dark and bitter, a perfect counterpart to both her mood and appearance. It had been an eye-opener when Erik had left her, his cold indifferent voice ringing in her ears. You are no longer one of us. Her chocolate eyes narrowed, flashing a dangerous yellow before she got control of herself, staring at the obsidian liquid. His betrayal had cut deep, leaving her lost and bewildered. It had been easy to let the anger take control, telling the government the Brotherhood’s whereabouts. She had loved him deeply; didn’t he realize that?

Shaking her head, she leaned back against the cool chair, pleased that the décor in the small coffee shop was wooden. Steel only made her mad. Her fingers slid along the table top, tracing the intricate designs. After making her deal with the government they had let her go, not seeing her as a threat anymore. She had wandered for a few days, unsure what to do or who she even was anymore.

She hadn’t been Mystique, that name had been erased from her as soon as the needle pierced her skin. Nor was she Raven Darkholme. Strumming her fingers, her lips curled in a frown. She would never be that pathetic creature again, not as long as she was able to breathe. Then one day, as she was walking the streets of New York, someone had bumped into her and she had looked in fascination as her hands began to change, morphing into the magnificent blue she missed. It went away, her color returning to the color of pale flesh that she abhorred, but days later she woke to find herself once again Mystique.

It had been difficult not to walk out into the world, to show everyone that she was whole again. She knew the government would figure out soon enough that the cure had failed and had contemplated finding Magneto, watching him realize that he wasn’t as helpless as he now believed. But he had betrayed her and she wanted nothing to do with him or his damn cause.

“Get it and let’s go.” Her head snapped up, she would know that callous voice anywhere. Turning towards the counter, she gripped the table as she spotted Magneto with Pyro and some other people she did not know. Mutants.

Taking a sip of her coffee, she glared at them. They had been her family. Standing up, she pushed in the chair and made her way towards the father exit, purposefully brushing against Magneto as she passed. He looked at her, glaring pompously down.

Her eyes flashed again and she watched with satisfaction as he registered who she was, his eyes widening in disbelief. She slipped out of the door, blending into the crowd, smiling as he rushed out of the shop, searching the sidewalk for her.

Family was overrated. She didn’t need anyone.
