Sara didn’t want to let go of Brenda’s hand.
If she was honest, she didn’t want to look at the girl either. When she did, she saw herself at five-years-old, sitting on the same kind of hospital bench, waiting for her mother to be checked out. At least I had Stephen, she murmured to herself, thinking of her older brother, her protector. Brenda has no one.
Eventually, the social worker returned and Sara released her grip on the girl’s hand. She smiled reassuringly, as the two disappeared down the hallway. She will never be alright. Sighing, she left the hospital.
