Running, that was all she ever did, her mind racing but never able to get anywhere. Nothing quieted it; images, voices, concepts, formulas, everything pouring into her, overloading her. Fingers danced along the panels of the ship, skirted over the tiny buttons that controlled its movement, careful not to push any, knowing the consequences of doing so.

The vastness of space should have equaled peace, a great nothingness to quench the never-ending onslaught. But the great expanse before her was not empty; it was reaming with life, with information. Subtler than before when there had been tubes and endless amounts of pills and liquids, confusing and sharpening her mind.

But it was still noisy.

Thoughts poured into her and she struggled to block them, or at least lower the volume, make them a constant buzz in the back of her mind. Statistics billowed from her mouth, fingers brushing over the console, caressing the lonely dinosaurs as she moved back and forth on the balls of her feet. Her head swayed to the side, focusing on a familiar thought pattern, letting it lead her out of the room and down the corridor.

Her feet barely touched the cold floor as she moved, quick and silent, a small smile playing on her lips. Hands traced along the walls, feeling Serenity beneath her fingers, her toes and inside of her, encompassing her entire being. She halted abruptly, mouth pressing together in agitation, eyes narrowing in calculation before swiftly changing direction, tucking herself carefully into a corner.

She controlled her breathing, alert as she watched the corridor. Her hand pressed against her mouth as she watched Simon round the corner with the Captain, anxiously looking for her. She waited patiently for them to pass, counting slowly before sliding out of her hiding place and moving on, slipping further into the ship, intent on missing her usual session with her brother.

Not a mouse. Not running in a cage. She curled into a vent, twisting until she fit. Resting contentedly against the wall, she closed her eyes, listening as everything combined into Serenity’s song, lulling her to a peaceful sleep. Peace.

Yay! I like this. I like your take on River, and how everything seems to frantic and fast, just like her :-)
