“Don’t wander too far!” Raven called, pursing her lips as Rogue nodded, knowing the girl was rolling her eyes as she walked down the beach.

“Leave her be, Raven,” Irene stated, and Raven turned to look at her lover. “She’s enjoying her freedom.”

“That’s what I’m afraid of,” Raven grumbled, placing her sunglasses on, her gaze on their daughter, standing in the incoming tide.

“Not from you, love,” Irene said, running a soothing hand down her back. “There is no one else here; she is free to roam without fearing an accidental transfer.”

Raven watched Rogue twirl in the water, laughing as the waves crashed against her feet. She gasped; remembering another of her children swallowed by water. An irrational fear rose in her, and she grasped a towel, quickly moving towards the girl.

“Momma?” Rogue asked, bewildered, as the towel was wrapped around her and Raven pulled her back onto the dry land.

“Stay out of the water,” Raven stated, and brushed hair from the girl’s face before walking away, blinking back tears.

“Let her go, Rogue,” Irene said. “There are some demons we must deal with on our own.”

“Who are they?” Rogue asked, looking out the window and down at the three men in the backyard.

“Your mother has recruited them,” Irene stated, frowning at the ruckus.

“Recruited them? What for?”

“In time you will know why, child,” Irene replied, gently running a hand through the girl’s hair. “Finish your studies.”

“I’d rather be with them,” Rogue mumbled.

“Knowing what has happened before helps one know what has yet to come,” Irene said and left the room.

Rogue sighed and looked down at the book, rolling her eyes as she looked at the pages. She knew what Irene had said was important; she just couldn’t bring herself to care. A loud crash from the yard caused her to return to the window, and anxiously peered down. She frowned as she watched Irene join the group, laughing at something Raven said.

A sudden chill moved up her spine, a stray thought running through her head. Maybe they don’t want me anymore… Raven looked up and Rogue froze, wondering if she would be in trouble for abandoning her books. Raven merely waved for her to come down and Rogue nodded, quickly running to join her family.

“Your hair is fine, Rogue,” Irene stated, smiling as the music began to play from the radio. “There is no reason to change it.”

Rogue ran a hand through her hair, looking in disgust at her reflection. “It makes you special,” Raven stated, steering the car past the gates. “Down.”

Rogue and Irene quickly ducked as the car veered quickly to the right, the sound of gunfire erupting outside the windows.

“He made fun of it,” Rogue mumbled, as she sat back up, noting the bullet hole in the front window.

“Who?” Raven asked, slamming the car into reverse, smashing her window as she fired off a few rounds at the vehicle chasing them.

“Freddy,” Rogue replied, nonchalantly handing Irene a round of ammunition. “Called me Skunk.”

“I can eviscerate him for you,” Raven said, looking back in the rear view mirror and smiled at the totaled military vehicle.

“Uh…don’t worry about it Momma,” Rogue said hastily as they made their escape.

“It wouldn’t be any trouble.”

Rogue didn’t like the predatory smile that spread across Raven’s face. “Oma, make her stop,” Rogue pleaded.

“She’s very protective of those she loves,” Irene replied, turning the volume up. “You know that.”

Rogue sighed as she leaned against the window, knowing there was no use saying anything further as the two began singing along to the music.
