Irene listened, sipping the decrepit coffee, as she stared blankly ahead, seeing what would occur seconds, sometimes minutes, before it did. Her fingers slid over the table, frowning at the stickiness.
“Which one, Momma?” Rogue asked, and Irene could see her eager expression. The girl didn’t want to disappoint.
“Our waitress,” Raven replied and Rogue scoffed.
“That’s easy,” Rogue murmured and slid out of the booth.
Irene closed her eyes, seeing the girl’s hand brush against the woman’s bare arm. There would be a quick catching of breath on both their parts, the woman unsure what had just occurred, while Rogue tried to process all she saw. “She’s becoming more at ease with using her power,” Raven whispered, placing a hand gently on her knee.
“She is,” Irene replied as the girl settled back across from them, knowing their daughter was afraid of her growing enjoyment in using her gift.
“Who’s next?” Rogue asked, anxiously.
“That’s enough for today,” Irene replied and stood, ignoring the curious glance she knew they both were directing at her as she exited the diner. Like mother, like daughter.

Irene didn’t want to tell her, wanted to let Rogue enjoy her night out, but she saw what would happen if they didn’t intervene and didn’t relish the thought of the girl enduring another catastrophic absorption so soon after Cody’s.
“We need to get Rogue,” Irene stated, hand hovering over Raven’s hair.
“She’s upstairs,” Raven replied, looking curiously at her lover.
“She left an hour ago,” Irene said, with a slight smile. “For the spy, you have not been very observant this evening.”
“It’s hard when you are nuzzling my ear, love,” Raven told her, irritation evident as she stood. “Where did she go?”
“The pier,” Irene replied, following her to the car. “She is merely trying to fit in.”
“She is not one of them,” Raven bit out, turning the wheel with more force than was necessary.
Irene didn’t reply, knowing any argument she gave would fall on deaf ears. The car stopped and she watched in her mind as Raven stalked over to Rogue and her companions, wrenching the girl out of the crowd and scolding her as they walked back to the car. Irene frowned.
“Don’t do anything foolish,” she warned, right before Raven closed the door.
A few moments later the driver side and back door opened. “You were drinking!” Raven yelled, slamming the door shut.
Rogue sighed, slinking into the seat and fastened the belt. “I had a sip.”
“You were stumbling on the way to the car,” Raven growled as they drove away. “And that Freddy boy was a second away from removing your shirt.”
“I just want to be normal,” Rogue murmured, face pressed against the window.
“Baby, you’re far better than normal,” Raven replied and Rogue snorted.
“I’m a weapon,” Rogue snapped, glaring.
“You’re my daughter and you are powerful,” Raven told her and Rogue sighed. Irene’s eyes widened, hearing the next words in her mind, dread filling her as they reverberated in her ears. “I believe you’re ready for missions.”
Irene closed her eyes, hearing Rogue’s enthusiasm and sensing Raven’s pleased smile. If they are happy, that is all that matters…
