“You must focus,” Raven said, evenly, causing Rogue to look up.
“I thought we were here to pick up the books Oma ordered,” Rogue replied, raising an eyebrow.
“Do you remember what to say?” Raven asked as they entered the store.
“Yes, Momma,” Rogue answered, grinning, hands instinctively delving into her pockets, even though she was wearing gloves.
“Good girl,” Raven replied, slipping into the crowds.
Rogue watched her go, nervously chewing on her bottom lip as she moved after her, watching her disappear. She looked closely at the people she passed; knowing she’d never know which one was Mystique by sight, having to trust her gut. As she walked past a little boy looking at the statue of an owl, she stopped, a familiar feeling twisting in her stomach as she looked at him.
“The cure for boredom is curiosity,” she said, looking intently at the little boy.
“There is no cure for curiosity,” the boy replied, yellow eyes flashing at her. “Good girl.”
Rogue smiled, watching him slip further into the store, ready to play continue private game of hide-and-seek.
Later that afternoon, Rogue gave Irene the books she had ordered. “I found Momma seven times,” she informed her with a large smile. “Next time I’ll find her every time she changes.”
She skipped away, never noticing the frown on Irene’s face, nor hearing the terse conversation they had later that night.

Lightning flashed in the sky, creating shadows along the walls. A blood curdling scream pierced through the house, causing Raven to wake up, clenching the sheets on top of her. The scream turned to long wails and she hesitated, looking anxiously at the door.
“She needs you,” Irene stated, unmoving from her side of the bed. Raven looked at her, and lightning crackled, illuminating her lover’s scowl. “Go to her.”
Raven glared as Irene turned away, hating that she was right, unable to believe she was afraid of comforting the girl. She entered Rogue’s bedroom, stopping in the doorway and watched as her daughter thrashed about on the bed under the sweat drenched blanket, crying profusely.
“I’m sorry. I’m sorry. Cody, I’m sorry!”
She forced herself to move forward and sit on the edge of the bed, pulling the girl into her lap and brushing her hair from her forehead. “Shhh, baby. You’re okay,” Raven murmured. “It’s just a dream. Shhh. I’m here.”
Slowly, Rogue began to calm down, her breathing evening out, curling into Raven’s side. “She is your daughter, Raven,” Irene stated from the doorway, and Raven turned. “Not just a weapon.”
Raven watched her walk away and scowled, before looking back at Rogue’s sleeping form. She gently laid her back down and brushed a hand through her hair before walking towards the door. “I do love you,” Raven whispered and exited the room.
“I love you too, Momma.”
