Irene’s grip faltered, the glass dropping to the floor, shattering into a million pieces. She gripped the side of the kitchen island, eyes widening in horror as the images flashed in her mind. Oh no, child, no… She watched helplessly as Rogue and Cody kissed, innocently experimenting what they’d seen grown ups do. Cody shook, his eyes rolling to the back of his head as Rogue released him screaming, falling onto the side of the riverbank…

“Irene!” Raven called, rushing to her side, grasping her and helping her to a chair.

“Get to the river,” Irene told her, leaning against the chair, closing her eyes in defeat. “Wear gloves.”

She heard the door swing shut a few minutes later and pinched the bridge of her nose, knowing this was the beginning of the end for their happy family.

Raven ran as fast as her feet would carry her, pushing through the forest to get to the area she knew Rogue enjoyed playing. Her mind was racing, knowing this was what she had been waiting for, the onset of the girl’s power. She didn’t know what it would be; only that Irene had seen she would be powerful and useful in their plans.

She stopped outside of the clearing, eyes widening as she saw the Robbins boy lying unmoving on the ground. Rogue was a few feet away, hunched into a ball, tears rolling down her face. Raven didn’t even think as she rushed to her, dropping quickly at her daughter’s side and pulling her up to look at her.

“Mrs. Darkholme?” Rogue asked, her voice sounding odd.

Raven’s eyes narrowed, gloved hands clasping the girl’s face. “What did you call me?”

Rogue looked unblinkingly at her before she gasped, bottom lip quivering in fear. “Momma, Cody is in my head,” she said, clawing at her hair. “Make him go away, Momma, make him go away.”

Raven grasped her hands. “Stop that,” she ordered and Rogue sniffled.

“I’m sorry, Cody, I’m sorry,” Rogue said, her tears continuing unabated.

Raven picked her up, carefully carrying the girl back to their house unsure what activated her child’s power. Passing Cody’s body, she smiled bitterly at the fallen little boy. We will call once we are out of town.

“I’m sorry we have to leave,” Rogue said, looking forlornly at the quickly packed suitcases.

“It is hardly your fault, liebling,” Irene replied, running a hand through her hair, frowning when the girl flinched.

“Yes it is!” Rogue cried, tears welling in her eyes. “I hurt Cody.”

“You could not have prevented that from happening,” Irene told her, wiping tears from her face.

Rogue nodded, picked up a suitcase and exited the house. Irene sensed the turmoil in her before hearing Raven descend the stairs. “I believe you need to speak to her,” Irene told her.

“She’ll be fine,” Raven said dismissively, scooping up the last of the luggage. “There is always a period of adjustment to acquiring one’s powers.”

Irene pursed her lips, shaking her head at Raven’s avoidance of the girl’s problems, knowing they wouldn’t be resolved for some time. She shut the door and took a seat in the car, hearing a depressed sigh from behind.

“Think of this as an adventure,” Raven stated, causing Irene to frown.

Rogue merely nodded and watched the house disappear into the distance, hands pressed against the glass of the window until it was no longer visible.
